For My Students

This site is for my students and friends and over the last nearly half-century.

It is not for the world, though the Internet exposes us to the entire world. It’s meant for those whom I have personally known or for their students and friends.

I find it strange that we let people whom we do not know have an impact on who we are. I’m not talking about what we do because lots of people impact us without us having any say in the matter. But, I’m talking about what it means to be you.

That reminds me of a story. I was in my late 20s and my young family and I were flying into Nigeria for a second term. The mission provided a bus to pick us up along with another family coming in on their first term. It was a doctor of theology and his family. He was in his 40s. At that point I didn’t have a doctorate. Dr. So-and-so decided to sit with me on the four hour trip.

As we talked, he discovered that I was from a different theological background, which is seen by many protestants as a big division in the church. So he immediately began to try to convert me. I looked at him and I said, “You can save your breath because I won’t listen to a word you’re saying for I have not seen your life. And until I see Christ in you, I’m not interested in your theology.” He was shocked. How could this young buck speak to him, Dr. So-and-so, like that?

It is the people who we know that have the largest impact on our lives, whether we like it or not, and whether it’s good or not.

You say to me, “Do you know all the authors of the books you recommend to us?”

Nope, I don’t know them but they have been recommended by people that I highly respect, or they have been hand picked by God Himself.

I’m serious. God actually picks my books. He’s my best friend and He can recommend books as well as others.

Throughout my life, God has done it over and over again. And there’s been no question that He’s been the One guiding. For example, my mentor, Dave, suggested a particular book which I started reading, but I set it down on page 80. And it sat there for years. However, before it was known that I had cancer, I was going to the hospital on a regular basis for transfusions to keep me alive. One morning I woke up and I knew I had to go to the hospital for a transfusion and so I grabbed my Bible and this book I had sat down so long before. Well, I never got home and I was gonna be stuck in the hospital for a long time. And I was gonna be wrestling with God. Not over whether or not I was gonna live or not. That wasn’t really the issue. But I did have questions. It’s a bit strange to be so close to death and not be expected to live and so I started asking questions and God said pick up the book and, guess what, there was the answer for my first question. I can take you to it today. It is on page 82. And the wrestling match began. You can read more about it in one of my books.

So this is for you, my students and friends and family. I love you. And I’d enjoy talking to you about the things I’ve written. But for those of you that I don’t know, please talk to the person that gave you the material. They’re the ones you should be learning from. And if God just dropped this book or site into your lap, then talk to Him about it. It’s not that I don’t care for those that I have not known, but I do wonder why you’d wanna learn from me if you’ve not seen my life?

As computer people, we are logical. If you apply logic, you’ll learn that Jesus is the only logical answer to life. Graciously, Jesus makes Himself available to all. We only need to seek Him.
